Nawaz Sharif won’t contest a seat in parliament in a by-election next month. He has withdrawn from the March 10 poll in his hometown of Lahore, said Siddiq-ul-Farooq, a spokesman for Sharif’s Pakistan Muslim League party. Sharif on Jan. 29 urged the Supreme Court to reopen corruption charges against President Asif Ali Zardari, saying a failure to do so would endanger the country’s democracy.
The former leader may name one of his party workers to contest the election in his place, Pervez Rashid, his spokesman, told GEO television in a telephone interview. Sharif has until Feb. 18 to inform the Election Commission he won’t stand, he said.
